"Volverán las oscuras golondrinas", famous poem by Gustavo Adolfo Becquer

Hi there! After a long time, I would like to share with you a beautiful poem by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. We could say this is the most well-known one that he wrote.

It is called "Volverán las oscuras golondrinas" and it is a perfect example of the Romanticism period. The person in love remembers with desperation his/her lost love, and contemplates that everything else will live again (golondrinas (bird), madreselvas (plant), words...) expect for that lost love, plus the fact that will not be able to meet again. The only thought that consoles and energizes that person is that nobody else will be able to love somebody else like how he fortunately did.

Volverán las oscuras golondrinas

En tu balcón los nidos a colgar,

Y otra vez con el ala en los cristales

Jugando llamarán.

Pero aquellas que el vuelo refrenaba

Tu hermosura y mi dicha al contemplar,

Aquellas que aprendieron nuestros nombres…

¡Esas…no volverán!

Volverán las tupidas madreselvas

De tu jardín las tapias a escalar,

Y otra vez a la tarde aún más hermosas

Sus flores abrirán

Pero aquellas, cuajadas de rocío

Cuyas gotas mirábamos temblar

Y caer como lágrimas del día….

¡esas…. no volverán!

Volverán del amor en tus oídos

Las palabras ardientes a sonar, tu corazón de tu profundo sueño

Tal vez despertará.

Pero mudo y absorto y de rodillas

Como se adora a Dios ante su altar,

Como yo te he querido…., desengáñate….

¡así... no te querrán!

Volverán las oscuras golondrinas - Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

¡Hola golondrinas (a type of bird)! :) Today I want to share with you a very well-known and beautiful poem called Volverán las oscuras golondrinas, written by the famous poetist Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

He was kind of famous during his life, but he really became an icon in Spanish Romantic poetry after he died. He was from Sevilla (Spain), in the southern part of Spain. He also did some painting, but the poems were the key of his success.

He died from tuberculosis when he was 34 years old. Before dying, he asked his friend Augusto Ferrán to publish his work. He had the feeling that he would be much more famous after dead. And he certainly was right. It was the painter Casado del Alisal who made it possible, after raising a fund and getting enough money to publish it and help his family.

Canción del Pirata - José de Espronceda

¡Hola piratas! :D Today I want to show you a poem written in the 19th century by one of my favourite Spanish poets, José de Espronceda.

The poem talks about the freedom of the pirates from the authorities and the governors, and all the responsabilities that this freedom implies for them.
